 What a beautiful morning it was today. Here’s Isla taking a break. No retrieving work today, just a lovely walk through a local provincial park on a crisp fall day. She’s doing so well I don’t want to overdo it!

Isla's first time in the ring

Hi Don,

 

Isla and I had a lot of fun at the Cobequid Dog Club confirmation. A new experience for both of us, especially since we spend nearly all of our training/fun time in the bush or on the lakes in the Bowater Mersey area.

Isla did her best, despite my complete lack of understanding regarding the confirmation ring. Definitely brought a lot of humor to the proceedings. The point was to expose Isla to something completely different and she handled herself quite well (reasonably calm while ring-side for 30+ minutes) and toward the end of the night SHE figured out how to “trot” in the ring (good thing as I was clueless). Attended (without Isla) the Rally and Obedience event today and really liked what I saw in terms of the course and training that would be involved in some of the more advanced classes. Pretty cool.

The most experiences the better!

Brandy Update

Attached is a recent picture of Brandy (just taken this evening) that I thought you might like to see.  She's a nice lookin' dog and continues to keep my Dad on his toes - she's still pretty busy and has what seems like an endless amount of energy! lol  PS:  I think she'd make a real good tracking dog cause her nose is somethin' else!!!!!

Hi Don,

Great to chat with you today. As promised, here’s a photo of Isla at 7 months. She continues to be a great, great dog! Off-leash heal is coming along beautifully. All the basic commands are in place and we continue to refine. Retrieving continues to be crisp and quick (both out and back). A couple of weeks ago we were working on recall (one of our favorite things to do and super important based on the fact we spend most of our time in the hills or bush)… Isla was 200 feet away sitting on a rise in the ground where I had left her. After a two or three minute wait, three tweets of the whistle and watch out! Here she comes at a full run. About 2 feet in front of me she applies the brakes and comes to a sliding stop right at my feet in a perfect sit! Such a blast! She works well with basic hand signals as well. Smart dog! Her manners continue to develop… when we go to the door she sits and we go through the door, then around to the cars and then call her and she comes and sits as expected… no stress when going through doors or getting in and out of the cars (she waits until asked to come out with us, even with the car door open… always in a safe place though).

Merlin is living it up as usual

Hello! Hope the summer is treating you well in Dartmouth.

Merlin is living it up as usual: camping, another trek to Gros Morne and another successful ascent of the Mountain. Although I beat him out on the Tablelands after an unplanned trek to the top! The view was amazing and after a few days of rest I hope he thinks it was worth it. When we got home today he went straight to bed! I have some nicer shots of him on the “real camera” but for now the cell phone pics will suffice.
