Ontario Veterinary College Receives Report On Risk Of Dog Importation

From the  The Toronto Pet Daily :

Risk Of Dog Importation “The Tip Of The Iceberg"

Last year, our group invested many hours compiling statistics on the little-known and rapidly growing trend of importing dogs from other countries to Canada. Along with a dramatic and steady increase in new 'foreign rescue organizations', many SPCAs and Humane Societies, seeing a drop in shelter admissions, have joined in the frenzy and are now reaching out to rescue animals outside of Canada while Canadian dogs and cats continue to perish in Northern Communities and in Canadian shelters in other provinces. We've also noticed another disturbing trend - rescuers and individuals are knowingly and successfully importing sick dogs into Canada, crowdfunding to 'cure them' and then educating others in how to 'beat the system' with unscrupulous methods aimed at exploiting the existing laxity in CFIA requirements. A few months ago, in the interest of our public health and the wellness of our own pets, we issued a call to action for this to stop. Unfortunately, it appears that hardly anyone is listening since very little has changed. In fact, foreign importation is on the rise.

24 hours as a Doindogs puppy owner

We have owned a Doindogs puppy for 24 hours now. As first time puppy owners we searched out advice from Don and experienced owners. What we worried about was helping the pup learn expectations and how to both comfort her and also train her.  We work in healthcare, have had adult dogs, are mature and have had enough intelligence to raise human animals. We thought we were smart enough.

Now hours into this with a seven week old pup, she has turned the tables on us. After planning how we would house-train her, she trained herself .  So much for that.

We showed her the new fancy shmancy gated play pen for her. Its metal with a pressure and lift latch, and swings to the inside. She showed us (while looking at her new Dad), that she was happy to demonstrate how to open it.   After a call to Don, we learned that she comes from a line of dogs that are just that smart with doors and latches. So much for that purchase.

We showed her all the new toys that we thought would challenge her. She showed us that if one of the pile of them is missing, she will notice after taking inventory, and find it. If we move her pile, she inspects it to see if we did it correctly. She also "talks" to anything with a face on it quite seriously if it doesn't stay where she wants it. A few special ones can be in her bed. She has a system. So much for that challenge.

24 hours in, and we're now wondering how we ever lived without a Doindogs puppy, and what to show her next so she won't be bored. Merciful heavens. While she sleeps we'll look for training courses. For us.

Gems at 7 weeks

Hi Don & Pierrette,

Its a sunny day here on the Cape finally. Gems is fitting nicely into her new home and she is sitting for her food, sit/waiting at each door to be open, for us to go through first. Also Gems is coming when her name is called and sits/ waits. Gems is very trainable and smart at 8 weeks of age, just like Rye was. Rye is adapting to the new pup (Gems) very well as I suspected. Rye has a great temperament, so I didn't see their being any issues.

"Gems" is a Dot/Puck pup and so is "Rye". Dot/Puck  are a great breeding pair for sure.
Talk soon,Take care

Joey is growing like a weed

Hi Don,

Joey is growing like a weed and doing very well on his Eukanuba. I found a pet store very close to me that sells this product so that helps me out having it so close.

He is having a grand time with his play mate, Koda, a two year old German short haired pointer. Koda is living at my place with his owners while they are having a new home built. ( The owners, Pat and Jeana Hunt, said they have met you before at a dog event. )  The first two attached photos give a good comparison ( Koda next to Joey ) of how much Joey has grown.

He has another friend, Kelsie, a three year old yellow lab. Joey spent a week with Kelsie when I became very ill and was in bed unable to do anything for myself.  Kelsie is owned by an older couple who have always owned labs themselves. I received daily reports on Joey while he was away, including pictures and videos on facebook. The second two photos are of Joey when he spent the week at the Tranquil Times Bed and Breakfast in Annapolis.

Joey is very affectionate. He often wants to just sit and snuggle.  He will frequently jump on the bed when I'm resting or watching television, put his paws around my neck and lay his head in the crook of my neck.  He seems to be very aware of people's situation ( ie; young or old, energetic or feeble, comfortable with dogs or fearful ) and he responds very appropriately. He is especially compassionate with little children and older folks. Joey is a great dog and I'm sure glad that I have this little guy for a companion.

Hoping all is well with you and your wife.

Jax is doing great

Hi Don,

She is very cute! I will think to see if there is anyone I know looking for a puppy. She would be a great one!

Jax is doing great - he is almost one now and is very handsome. He is a Dot/Ai pup but I think he looks like mostly like Dot!

Here a few pics from the past few months. He is well loved and pretty spoiled. Ha.

Take care,

Pictures of Sage

Hello Don,

I just wanted to send you a quick update and some pictures of Sage. She is
doing great with a clean bill of health and the vet was impressed with her
muscular stature. Sage has all kinds of energy and wants outside all the
time no matter what the weather is!

This fall was her first hunting season and as you can see from the pictures
she has turned out to be a great grouse flushing lab. She impressed me all
fall with that nose of hers and her ability to find downed birds in thick
cover. Heck, to tell you the truth I do not even care if we get birds most
days since I get more enjoyment out of watching her work. It has certainly
been more fun and exciting hunting with a dog again so thanks so much for

I hope things are well with you.
