Hi Don

 

Very nice to hear from you as I have been meaning to send you pictures of Levi for the last few months, I just don't know where the time goes!!  Levi is doing very well, he is an awesome pup!!  He is a very happy loving dog and I must say very handsome as well!  He had a wonderful summer swimming at the beach almost everyday, he just loves the water.  I have attached two pictures for you, one from the beach around the end of August and the other from this fall at our house, he stole a yellow tomato from the garden. 

 

We will hopefully be coming thru your way next month with Levi and we would love to stop in for visit. 

 

I will gather more pictures and send them along in the next couple of days.  I hope all is well with you, hi to Pierrette and all the dogs!!

It is very good for Shana that I am not working and be able to spend a lot of time with her.

Today we have been walking the East Coast Trail with her in Flatrock. She never gets tired :)!

Hi Don,

Thanks for the papers. Maggey is doing really well and growing every day. We are up the camp every weekend. I take Maggy with me in the woods bird hunting. For only 4 months she is doing really well on the whistle. I'm actually sending this email from my tree stand behind the camp. I've passed on several does so far; waiting for a buck.

Hope all is well. The beast is being a good boy. I had him into the vet last week as his one eye was a little inflamed. The conjuncts was very red and puffy. They have him on some eye drops and he's getting better each day.

 

Mary Elizabeth, Katherine and I took a quick trip to the valley and I took a couple of nice shots of Joe (Joey). They are attached.

Attached are a few photos of Gunny. He is having an excellent first season. He now has 31 game retrieves under his belt. These photos were taken today (Oct 27).He flushed 2 grouse of which I shot one and 8 hares of which I only managed to get 2. Those suckers can move! Great day all the same.

Lab Pup Bo

Hi Don,

 

We have named our pup "Bo". He is settling into life with us already. He

slept through the night in his crate with not even a whimper. We have had

him out for 2 walks and the boys are looking forward to a day outside with

him.

Dawson is incredible

I want to thank you once again for your amazing lab. Dawson is the most incredible dog I have ever had. My wife Tina says the same thing. This guy has a personality unlike any other dog. He never leaves my side when I am outside, he drives me a little nuts to play fetch, but that is to be expected.

He has declared our trout pond his own personal pool and will wander over for a dip at any given time without warning if he is hot. He will fetch out of the water without hesitation.

I always wanted a dog that would run and jump into a pond and this one does. He is incredible. He accidentally got on the scent of a cock pheasant in our side woods and he was a sight to behold. His tail looked like a helicopter and I could hear his nose snapping shut. Suddenly the pheasant was flush up and he turned to look at me like he was wondering why I didn't shoot it. I didn't have a gun! I was just walking with him. I only did an hour of retrieving with a pheasant wing the year before and he was all over it.

At night he will sleep by the bed on my side and if he gets mad at me for being at work too long or away... he hides one piece of my footwear outside. He doesn't chew it, just puts it out in the rain, and only one. He is truly a joy. I was right, he is the perfect lab.

This is a Mutt/Ai pup, born 29 April this year. She is with great owners in Northern Labrador, a Labrador in Labrador with Australian roots! Mutt’s mother is from Kadnook Kennels of Australia.

He got multiple retrieves this year.  Amazing what a pocket full of rocks will do.  Briggs retrieved a duck in the grass from the next blind over and the guy wanted to buy him, lol.

A very appreciative family

Dear Donald Bates of Doindogs,

Your puppy has made our son so incredibly happy.

It was all that my husband and I could do last Friday to get through our evening with you without emotionally breaking down.  I do not think that you know how much this puppy was needed and will be much loved at this time.

Our son attended the Atlantic Hockey Showcase (by Andrews Hockey Growth Program in June) in Charlottetown,PEI and was approached by four different hockey academies to play for them this fall.  He was scheduled to attend an academy in Alberta on September 1st when he received the devastating news (by a Neurosurgeon) that he is never allowed to play hockey or any other form of contact sports again due to post concussion syndrome.  To say that his whole entire world came crashing to a halt and that he is now lost and devastated would be an understatement.

My husband was on the phone with me on Friday and indicated that on top of all of our son's situation, our nine year old black lab is not doing so well.  We believed that if our family lost this dog right now, and we did not have a new puppy, it would only compound his feelings. 

 

I believe in fate.  I asked our son if he would be interested in having his own dog.  His answer was immediately yes.  I had him to call his friend to find out where he got his new male black lab puppy from,  and that is what led to my phone call to you.

To see how the puppy gravitated to our son immediately and that he had an instant connection - was priceless.

While our son tries to find a new path for himself,  he will be able to do it with the love and support of his family, close friends and now the unconditional love from his new dog.

I thought that it was important for you to know the profound affect that this has had on our family. The puppy has acclimated very well with our other two dogs and they have responded to her beautifully (nine year old black lab and two year old beagle).

Jil...well for the time being..Jil is almost as big as her now! Growing fast

and doing well. Coming to the whistle 75% of the time, Sit, Heel and Stay

going well. She fetched a dead duck I had shot on opening day that I froze

for training...hope all is well! Can't wait until next year..not the same

with Canoes and Waders for a retriever!

Roux

Hi Don,

Roux is doing great! He now weighs 54.8 lbs and he is getting bigger every

day! Marc and I are loving him more and more every day. He keeps us busy
and is now sleeping past 6am :) There was a time he was up at 4am! Ha ha!

The picture attached is him at 4 months...he is gorgeous!

Pearl says hello from New Brunswick

Hey Don, I trust all is well.  I thought I would drop you an email to see if you were due into Saint John anytime soon.  I'm nearing the last week or so of food and thought I'd see if you were due into town on business. 

Pearl is doing fantastic, she's been doing great with her training, has a brilliant nose and really fitting in well with our family.  I've attached a recent picture.  I had sent some shortly after getting her home to Saint John but didn't hear back, I'm not sure if they made it to you..

Opening day for duck hunting

Yesterday, opening day for duck hunting, Josh took to the marshes

with his Dad and grandfather. This time he had his own license and gun. He

shot two ducks and Doindogs Abbie retrieved them!! The pictures tell how

happy Josh was!!

Kadnook update

Good morning Don

 

We received your newspaper article on Monday regarding L.L. Bean Freeport.

Certainly brought back memories of our visit there with yourself.

We do not have anything like that here in Australia.

 

All is going along OK here. Jill had another treatment last Monday, all her bloods were stable and the readings were OK.

 

We have had some very wet weather recently. This winter has been our wettest for 21 years, and two weeks ago we had our windiest week for 47 years with winds up to 146 kph, YES I have had more than enough of the wind. We lost the big silver gum in front of the dog shed, luckily it fell straight across the gate out into the next door neighbours paddock, a small part of the concrete flooring was the only other part damaged other than the gate, I’m still cleaning up the tree after cutting it up into firewood. We lost the tree that you helped me cut up a branch from while you were here – a branch off one of the trees near the dog yard gate – and one of the bottle brush bushes at the front also blown over – and a large blue gum on the neighbours property was blown down near where the other one came down last year. So there is an abundance of firewood around. The local Shire Councils are still cleaning up all the fallen trees along the roads.

 

As a result of the wind we were without electricity for 3 days, the portable generator did a super job keeping us powered up, freezers working etc., we did miss the hot water though.

 

John Stott and ‘Millie’ are on the Championship Retrieving Trial circuit. Millie finished 3^rd in the South Australian C’ship 2 weeks ago, then 2^nd in the Western Australian C’ship last weekend, and the National starts on Friday – there are 3 Kadnooks entered in the National this year being conducted in Western Australia.

Jil is doing great

Mets lots of people and have had her in many an interesting woods and water.  Not swimming yet, but goes in up to her belly.  She's 75% coming to the whistle, has chased down and retrieved live Quail (Sorry I couldn't get on film, but didn't come together..soon maybe)Starting to get Heel and Stay..always hungry and lots of fun!!

Here is a link to a facility in Australia that now has Puck’s mother and three of his litter-mates. I visited them, and couldn’t have been more impressed with them. Kadnook has been very involved in guide dogs for the blind, including the failed attempt to breed a good dog by crossing a lab with a poodle.

Keough and Key (Fatal Porcupine Encounter)

Below is the account of Keough's unfortunate encounter.  We sill miss him.  The new pup Key is wonderful...very attentive and already responds to his name and some basic commands.  We sense that he will respond well to training.  He seems a bit slow on the bathroom training ...but that will come.    Fatal Porcupine Encounter

 

On Friday August 24^th we were entertaining company on our back deck and our (barely) one year old black Labrador, Keough had joined us and was getting acquainted with our guests.  We live in the country and our house is surrounded on all sides by forest and streams.  Wildlife is quite common around our house and we  regularly observe animals nearby.   It was late evening and dark when Keough decided to go down the steps of the deck.  He was only out of sight for a few moments  and returned whimpering;  full of porcupine quills.   Quills were embedded in his nose, chin, face, chest and abdomen.  We immediately brought Keough into the house and began removing the quills using needle nose pliars.  The dog was very cooperative at the start and seemed to sense that we were trying to help him.  We removed at least 150 quills but as his initial shock wore off and the pain began to intensify, he became increasingly agitated and we decided to call emergency veterinary services.  We were able to bring him in for treatment immediately.  The vet sedated Keough and removed more quills.  While sedated and he was carefully examined, it was determined that some quills had penetrated deeper into his chest area.  Several quills were surgically removed from his chest. After approximately 2 hours at the Veterinary Clinic he was sewn up and we took him home.

 

Keough seemed to sleep okay that night and appeared to be himself the next morning.  However, as the day wore on, he became less and less mobile, would stand motionless and would not eat.  Saturday night was rough for Keough as he did not seem to be able to get comfortable by lying down, and consequently, he did not sleep.  We attributed this to the tenderness of the surgical wound. Sunday was much the same; he would not eat and could not lie down.  We did manage to get him to drink some water.  He was very tired and was falling asleep on his feet.   After lunch we decided to take him back into the vet.  Chest x-rays were performed and if was determined that some quills had penetrated the lung wall and his lungs were filling with fluid.  The vet consulted with a specialist in PEI, who recommended that Keough be put down as the likelihood of further surgery saving him was not good.   The specialist indicated that Keough would likely not make it to PEI for the procedure.  It was a very sad day to lose our great friend and companion at such a young age.  We still miss him very much.

 

The following day we called Don at Doindogs to inform him of the unfortunate news and tell him what a great dog Keough was.  As our luck should have it, we were able to obtain a new 8 week old black male pup the very same day. We named him “Key”.

We have learned from this experience and are beginning to control the porcupines on our property. Additionally, we will not be allowing the dog in the yard off-leash after dark given that porcupines seem to be more nocturnal as opposed to coming around during the day.  Although the recall command would not have saved Keough as we did not see the encounter developing, perfecting recall may very well prevent similar encounters and we plan to diligently instill this command with our new pup.
