Gracie Adjusting well
Hello Folks,
Just a quick email to let you know that Gracie is doing well. She knows her name, is already retrieving and her accidents are very few. If there are any accidents it is our fault for not recogizing the signals she is giving us.
Hard to believe we have had her home with us now 2 weeks. Gracie was very good on the drive home from Dartmouth and did not seem to miss her litter mates too much.
She has almost tripled in size it seems and is very curious about everything. Her most favorite dicovery is the wild strawberries in our backyard. She loves them and keeps her nose to the ground every time she goes out hoping to find some to gobble down.
Gracie is a joy and we are all very happy to have her part of our home. Mariah is thrilled to say the least. She had taken Gracie into the school for all her friends and teachers to met.
Right now she is at my feet asleep as I am typing this message to you. She doesn't wonder too far from me since I am the prime caregiver.
Got to run. If you are coming down this way, would be interested in some dog food.
All the best.
Patricia

Having great success with Gem's pups
Hi Don!
Having great success with Gem's pups. One is all age qualified and the other one is placing in every field trial.
When you have time could you please send gem's linear pedigree. We seemed to have misplaced it. Looks like we are getting her spayed this year (7yrs) but there has been great interest in the line.
Thanks for your time AND thanks for Gem :-)

Noah's 9th week (pics)
Hi Don How are you doing? Noah continues to do very well. Her as some pictures we took in the country and of him playing with a friend’s 16 week old whippet puppy. At first he couldn’t quite understand what to make of the scrawny creature barking in his face – but that lasted all of 1 minute. Then he was off chasing the little guy and eventually getting the better of him. Noah is one tough guy!!:-). So far he is growing well and just loves his meals. The picture of him and Ndani(our basenji) was when he heard my Mom preparing their dinner and came rushing across the field. So far we are sticking to the two retrieves, because that seems about all he can concentrate on, but he seems to get SIT most of the time and his COME is pretty good too – he is really smart J He is extremely friendly and just loves meeting people. We would have all the neighbourhood kids camped out at out house all day long to play with him if they could (not to say some of the adults too)! Anyway just thought I’d ‘bore’ you again with more pictures and news of Noah. Take care Vanessa
Mollie growing up (and having a ball)
Hi Don, Pierrette
Some pics of Mollie, also Daisy and Spencer taking a dip. I thought Daisy was a good swimmer but her young sister is Olympic standard! All three of them get on really well and are really happy together. Mollie is much more assertive than the other two and so is fast taking charge of the household (that includes Wendy and me) and, although quite a handful, she is simply wonderful, so much so that we always forgive her mischief. We are truly grateful to you both and will send you milestone pictures as Mollie grows up (although we wish she could stay a puppy)
Best from us both

Noah (pics)
Hi Don,
Here are some pictures of Noah that we took over the week when we in the country. Needless to say he just loved it!! He is really very sweet and of course very naughty and gets into everything. He is doing great and sleeps almost through the whole night, and has only had one ‘accident’ in the house so far. He is totally fearless and just loves to play with our older basenji, dani.
I think we have all forgotten how sharp puppy teeth are so there are some sore ankles and scratched arms around our house today but we learn quick too.
I will give you a call later this evening when I get home from work.
Vanessa
Delta Society - Raw Protein Diet Policy
Raw Protein Diet Policy
"Over the past few years, the increasing use of raw protein diets and the health concerns and controversy generated have grown, not only between the public and veterinarians, but often within the veterinary profession itself.
After careful consideration of all of the known scientific facts, and on the unanimous advice of the Delta Society Medical Advisory Board, made up of internal medicine and public health experts from North America, the board of directors voted to preclude animals eating raw protein foods from participating in Delta Society Pet Partners program. This will be a phased program, with complete compliance structured to be in place by June 30, 2010."

Morrigan (update)
Lovely to hear from you! I was actually thinking about sending you an email a week or two ago...
Last summer puppy and I moved to England (we live in Plymouth which is in the Southwest). It was all very rushed and I didn't have much time to say proper good-byes. Moving a dog to the UK is a very stressful process! Luckily, everything went very smoothly. It took her a few months to get settled but she is back to her usual happy self - still very much a puppy at heart. If she didn't have grey in her muzzle, you'd think she was 2 years old!
Dogs have it really good here - they are allowed to travel free on all public transport and are welcomed in pubs. Morriganne also has her own EU passport (she has more rights in Europe than I do as a Canadian!). There are also nice (dog-friendly) trails all over the country...including tons of coastal walks.
The weather has been beautiful lately and we're both pretty excited about the long, warm days. I bought her a soccer ball yesterday and she absolutely loves it! I'm going to get a surfboard this season as the surfing is really good here. Puppy can climb up onto the board and balance better than me. If I steady the surfboard while she climbs on, I can actually let her go and she does a decent job of surfing! She is definitely a unique dog.
I've attached a few pictures of puppy in her new home. I also have a Picasa site that I update on a fairly regular basis (http://picasaweb.google.co.uk/107173262355334826734).
How are you doing? Keeping busy? Have you had many more puppies this Spring?
I look forward to hearing news.
Cheers,
Lisa & puppy
Nala (pics)
Nala had her first swim last weekend. Not intentionally she was running after Tucker and then she was swimming. I think the water was still a little cold for her, she would follow him back in but not enough to swim.
Over the last couple of days she has been showing more interest in retrieving.
Since I was replying I figured I would attach some pictures of the bad one.

Hi from Bahrain (pics)
Just a brief note to let you all know that I have now finally arrived back in Bahrain safe and sound after a long but uneventful journey.
It was good to be home and see you all again and thank you all for the time I spent with you. We hope to be home again in early August and look forward to seeing you all once again.
Take good care and look forward to hearing from you when you get a chance.
All the best,
Rod
Coal (pics)
Just thought I send you a little note on Coal down here in Glace Bay. He's a great dog, getting big fast and he's great with our daughter Haleigh. He loves being around people, for example my daughter had her 3rd birthday last weekend and he was right in his glory out in the backyard playing with all the kids.My wife takes him for a walk everyday and he stays perfect on her left side without pulling or dragging. I don't think he's fussy about the car though. Coal really seems lost when my daughter is in daycare there turning in to such buddies, he misses her when she isn't around. Anyway just thought I send you an update. Oh ya I haven't received anything on his papers yet.Is that normal. How long does it usually take?
Thanks Chad

Be careful with dogs off-leash
from article
Hi everyone,
I had a scary incident yesterday at Long Lake provincial park and I was hoping you will take a few minutes to pass this email on to any of your dog loving friends who may use the park. I walk this trail occasionally and had just been there the day before with my own dogs and although it is not the most popular entry point, I know of another dog walker and a few other people who frequent the spot. The incident occurred on the Prospect Rd. side, behind Exhibition Park. I was walking four Springer Spaniels who love to bound through the woods but always "resurface" frequently and check in with me. It didn't take long for me to notice the mom of the group was missing. I began calling her and walking back along the trail but no sight of her so I walked back to the truck thinking she may have become disoriented but she was not there so we walked back down the trail again.
Fortunately, one of her daughters alerted me to something in the woods and I followed her in to find her mom sitting next to a small bush, not moving but still alive, about 15 or 20 feet off the main trail. It took me a while to realize the reason she was not moving was that there was a snare like the ones I have attached wrapped around her neck and she was actually suffocating. I reached in between the snare and her neck to give her a bit of air and thankfully I remembered an email that had been sent around a couple of years ago saying to do the opposite of what you would want to do ie: pull the snare apart so I pushed the snare closer together at the top of the dogs neck and thankfully it quickly unlatched and I was able to free the dog without further incident. She is doing fine now.
This could have ended so much differently and I am so thankful that it turned out the way it did but if you are like me, you may have a false sense of security on provincial park trails when it comes to hunting. I just want everyone to be careful - if possible keep your dogs on the main trails, you may want to put bells on your dog so they are easier to locate if they are out of sight and if this does happen to you, remember not to panic. Thanks to one of my other dog walking clients, I will now have a pair of wire cutters in my first aid kit (which can be purchased at Bark n' Fitz downtown) that I always carry with me when I am out hiking.
I have informed the department of Natural Resources about the incident and the Springers' owner will be taking this to the next level so at the very least there will hopefully be more signage letting people know they are not allowed to hunt back there.

grapes/raisins
The cause of grape toxicity is unknown. Dogs have been affected by red grapes, green grapes, seedless grapes, grapes with seeds, commercially grown grapes, backyard-grown chemical-free grapes, imported grapes, grapes grown in the USA, etc. Grapes causing toxicosis have been tested for a variety of toxins (including pesticides, heavy metals, mycotoxins, etc.) with negative results.
It is not known whether some dogs are more susceptible than others.
According to the literature, toxicity has occurred with amounts as small as
0.32 oz/kg. For a 40 pound dog, this is less than 6 oz of grapes/raisins.
It is not known whether the effects can be cumulative (e.g.: will eating small amounts of grapes/raisins over time cause the same effect as one large
dose?)
NO grapes or raisins are safe for dogs! Please do not feed any amount or any kind of grapes/raisins to your dogs!
Interesting article
This was not an obstruction. .... so she called the manufacturer of the Teddy Bear on a quest to find out what the gel was and what killed the dog. Turns out the stuffing in children's toys contains ingredients for flame retardants and mite control! It is designed to be come a gel. It is highly toxic. Now you would think a child's toy would be safe because it is for children, but they don't expect a child to eat the stuffing of the toys... huummmm that seems a bit scary too. But we all know dogs demolish stuffed toys.
So do not give or buy your dog any children's stuffed animals... some people get them at goodwill etc. The vet will be posting a warning and story and I will send any other facts as needed and as I learn more. Maybe some children's toys do not have this ingredient, but better to be safe then sorry. So meanwhile, make sure all your dog toys are for dogs. Please pass this on... it is a horrible death she described and one that can be avoided.

The Parkering
Just to let you know we received the papers for Parker. Everyone can’t believe how great of a dog he is.
I do have pictures, but any notorious for not downloading them, but even better, a friend of ours looked after him while we were away and he is a pro photographer and has pictures at the below link.
