Cocoa Mulch (warning)

Please tell every dog or cat owner you know.  Even if you don't have a pet, please pass this to those who do.Over the weekend the doting owner of two young lab mixes purchased Cocoa Mulch from Target to use in their garden.

They loved the way it smelled and it was advertised to keep cats away from their garden.  Their dog Calypso decided that the mulch smelled good enough to eat and devoured a large helping.  She vomited a few times which was typical when she eats something new but wasn't acting lethargic in any way.

The next day, Mom woke up and took Calypso out for her morning walk.  Half way through the walk, she had a seizure and died instantly.Although the mulch had NO warnings printed on the label, upon further investigation on the company's website, this product is HIGHLY toxic to dogs and cats.Cocoa Mulch is manufactured by Hershey's, and they claim that 'It is true that studies have shown that 50% of the dogs that eat Cocoa Mulch can suffer physical harm to a variety of degrees (depending on each individual dog).  However, 98% of all dogs won't eat it.'

This Snopes site gives the following information: http://www.snopes.com/critters/crusader/cocoamulch.asp

Cocoa Mulch, which is sold by Home Depot, Foreman's Garden Supply and other Garden supply stores, contains a lethal ingredient called 'Theobromine.'  It is lethal to dogs and cats.  It smells like chocolate and it really attracts dogs.

Obedience Trial

I entered Pat in the Halifax Kennel Club’s Obedience Trial, her first. She was ready when she was six mos old but nothing to enter. She qualified with a score of 191½. She is entered again for tomorrow but don’t plan any more for her until Dartmouth’s show in May. I have just started to train "It", may enter her in Bible Hill or Trenton.

Darby (pics)

HI Don,

Sorry we haven't been in touch sooner! Darby is doing great. She weighs 40 pounds and is growing fast.

We are going to puppy class, but we wish we were close enough to take classes with you. I'm sure you have a much better idea of how these dogs think. It seems that we need more training than her so that we know how to teach her. She learns really quickly.

She is going to doggy day care a couple of times a week just to tire her out. We just started this, and it is with the same people who do the classes. They help reinforce what we are trying to teach her. I talked to them after you sent the email about Parvo just to make sure they were aware. Thanks for the information.

We've attached a few pictures. The ones outside were taken yesterday, and the ones in the house were taken through the week. She is a beautiful girl.

Let us know if you are coming up this way. We'd love for you to see Darby. Hopefully we'll get down in the spring to see family, maybe we can stop in.

Crucial post-hunt dog care?

Dear Don,

I don’t know if you’re aware of this, but apparently it is crucial that labs get a full pedicure after every rabbit hunt!

Ridiculous!

Junne (pics)

Hi Don,

Junne is at the Groomers as we speak, having a bath, getting her ears cleaned and having her nails cut. She is a great dog, very spoiled but absolutely no trouble, great companion. wondering if you had any new puppies due in the spring?

Remington

Hi Don!

Hope all is well. Sorry to hear that you did not receive my email. I
had sent along a little note and attached a few pictures of Remington. He is doing extremely well. Marc and I could not ask for a better dog. I passed along your contact information as well as your web site address to a friend who lives in Belleisle. He is on the hunt for a lab and I highly
recommended you! I told him that he would not be disappointed. Pati :)

Loki

Hello,

Just wanted to let you know that we are all doing well. Loki (born March 21st 2008 from Roo & Beau) has been a wonderful dog and really receptive to training. I can’t imagine how we survived so long without having a dog. Just wanted to give you a picture of him. I will send you more soon.
