Rogue (update)

Hey Don,

Haven't spoken to you since Christmas, thought I'd give you a little updateon Rogue. First off, hope your trip to turkey went well. Glad you'respreading quality pups around the globe. :)

I've been taking Rogue to the dog park almost every day for the past threeweeks. She's a different animal since I started, an hour or two runningaround with other dogs has changed her in a way you wouldn't evenunderstand. She's so calm and relaxed, Nicole put her in the kennel at 5 pmtoday, and at 7 pm when she went to let her out she actually had to wake herup to get her to come out.

She still won't fetch at the dog park, even when we're alone, i thinkthere's too many distractions, however I'm not giving up on it.
She's starting obedience classes in February, and I think a few months afterthat I'll have a canine life partner. I love her.
I've included a few pictures, cause I know you love them. Some you may havealready seen (sorry, all I have is a cellphone camera, lame).

Buck Update

Hi Don,

First of all, I love all the pictures and updates you have on facebook! Sometimes I feel like I'm looking at pictures of Buck! I saw a post about you being in Turkey...great story!

Buck is doing great...He'll be 2 years in April - it's hard to believe really. It didn't take long for him to become a permenant fixture in our lives! We don't go too many places without him, and he's usually the guest of honor...which he loves of course!

I've been training throughout the fall/winter for a half marathon that is coming up in February, and Buck has been my faithful running companion! Someone asked me the other day how far was too far to run with Buck and I don't actually know the answer. I am in no way a speed demon when I run, and we've been training for quite a few months so we've gradually been adding km's. And typicall we run 4 times a week, with one long run a week (for example today I ran 18km).

I figured I would base his distance on his behavior, but I have yet to see him slow down or seem too tired to keep going.

I'm just wondering if you have any thoughts on this?? I Googled it, but you know what the internet is like - hard to find anything very definite or reliable. Anyway, I'm sure you're very busy, but if you do have any advice that you could pass along whenever you have time I would love to hear what you think.

Hi Don,

It has been a bit since I sent you an update. Both Tucker and Nala are doing well. We did not get out hunting as much as we usually do this season. The dogs did well when we did go, so I guess I will feed them for another year! I attached some photos. Sometimes I wonder what Nala is thinking. The photo where she is dirty and wet represents her well.

I have landed in Turkey with the two pups. I am much more than pleased with what I have found here than I expected. The buyers are truly interested in labradors and what is best for their dog. I couldn't be more pleased! I have been treated like a king and so have the pups, lots of pictures as proof. We went to a waterfront restaurant for dinner today and the owner of Dubi insisted on taking his pup with us. We were met at the door, the manager said that this would be the first but invited us in!Don

Here is another example of uinformed people buying pups! I just spoke to Momberquette, her vet suspected parvo but didn't even bother to check. Parvo is extremly contageous and deadly, a good vet would have confirmed his suspicions so he could properly protect the other dogs in his care and to also warn those who have been in contact with the pup! I suggest you Google Parvovirus, you will see that it can even be taken from one place to another on car tires!! The virus can even live in the ground for several months, ready to infect other dogs. Kijiji pup shoppers are expected to be uninformed, otherwise they wouldn't be there.

Hello Don and Pirette,

We hope you had a great Christmas. Bruin likes the tree, as the picture shows.

Bruin is growing like a weed. He weighed in at 21 lbs at the vet this morning. He is following the basic commands ( sit and come) and starting to fetch his toys.

It looks like we have him house broken as he now goes to the door when he needs out. Take care and we will keep you posted on his development.

Final arrangements have been made for me to take two pups to Turkey, the tickets came overnight! I am unable to leave Halifax until 7 January because all airlines leaving Halifax refuse to take pets over the Christmas period. I leave January 7^th, stop in Toronto for only 5 hours and then a direct flight to Istanbul. I will be sure to get lots of pictures! I get Turkey for Christmas, just a little late.

The AKC Canine Health Foundation (CHF) is committing more than $1.5 million in 2012 on research grants to help dogs live longer, healthier lives.

CHF approved 21 OAK grants to 14 research institutions and universities to conduct research covering canine health issues such as cataracts, carcinoma, dermatitis, epilepsy, liver disease, lymphoma, melanoma, and osteosarcoma. This year's grants cover research of diseases affecting all dogs and specific breeds, such as Australian Shepherds, Bassett Hounds, Greyhounds, Havanese, Irish Wolfhounds, Scottish Terriers, Shetland Sheepdogs and West Highland White Terriers.

"The selection of these grants represents great potential in advancing the health of all dogs and their owners," said CHF Chief Executive Officer and General Counsel Terry Warren. "The Foundation is dedicated to funding sound scientific research and disseminating health information that can prevent, treat and cure canine disease."

This year CHF received 109 OAK grant proposals. Part of CHF's two-level grant structure, the annually awarded OAK grants are one- to two-year, in-depth research projects that examine causes, provide accurate diagnosis and prognosis and develop effective treatments for canine disease. CHF also funds short-term research throughout the year called ACORN grants, which frequently produce preliminary data for possible future OAK proposals.

The canine and human genomes are highly similar. Thus, most canine diseases also occur in humans. "Research funded by the Foundation often provides information for discoveries in human illnesses," Warren said. "There are a number of research projects this year that have the potential to be translational from dogs to humans. As a result, we are not only helping our beloved companions, but we are helping ourselves."

CHF has invested more than $26 million in canine health research since its inception in 1995. Funding for the CHF OAK grants comes from a variety of sources. "We are fortunate to have fantastic support from the American Kennel Club, Nestlé Purina PetCare and Pfizer Animal Health," said Warren. "We also receive contributions from many all-breed, parent and specialty dog clubs as well as dog lovers around the world."

CHF has a distinctive and thorough grant process. It starts with gathering information from the American Kennel Club Parent Clubs, dog owners, breeders, veterinarians, academic institutions and researchers to establish canine health research priorities, which are posted on the CHF website at www.akcchf.org/research/research-priorities. "We encourage our investigators to submit applications based on these research priorities," explained Warren.

Researchers can submit research pre-proposals each year beginning in January. Once the pre-proposal period ends, the applications are initially reviewed by the CHF Grants Committee and often by experts in the application's field of study. Approximately one-third of the pre-proposals are selected for the researcher to submit a full proposal. Those applications are evaluated by volunteer peer reviewers. The CHF Board of Directors and Grants Committee then make the final decisions and award grants each fall.

It’s been awhile since I last gave you an update on Tucker. We have had quite a busy fall out on the marsh and in the field. He has shown great enthusiasm for birds and retrieving. I couldn’t be more pleased with the progress he has made this fall. The highlight so far had to be his first goose, which was banded to boot!! It has been a joy watching him grow into a great family pet and hunting companion. We are going to try for some Whistler’s in the coming weeks out on the river. I am sure if I can knock some down Tucker will go get them!!

Rogue update (pics)

Hey Don,

Just an update on Rogue, she's a whopping 28.7 lbs, hasn't had an accident

in 10 days, and that one was only out of jealousy (I had someone over and

wasn't paying attention to her, haha).

She fetches, she walks calmly on the leash--just up and down the backyard

for now--and she knows "find it". She stays for basically ever, longest I've

had her stay is close on 15 minutes.

She doesn't chew shoes, doesn't really chew on the furniture anymore, the

only thing I cant get her out of is chewing on any belonging of Nicole's,

haha. I think it's because she's a source of excitement, and doesnt really

practice much in the way of rules or boundaries with her--fortunately they

don't spend much time alone together haha.

I have videos, unfortunately I don't think my phone will let me send then.

Here is Jag, a male from Ch. Doindogs Chelsea Marie. Jag is 14 months old.

The pictures were taken Oct. 1 during the opening day of duck hunting season in New Brunswick. It was Jag's first shoot.

11 ducks were shot. Jag retrieved 11 ducks. The owner advises 4 were difficult blind retrieves!

As you can see from the pictures the owner and Jag were pretty happy!

Good morning Don,

Over the last weekend the Victorian State Championship Retrieving Trial was run. The clear winner was Ret.Trl.Ch. Kadnook Dream Alil Dream [Milly].

‘Milly’ is a bitch Wayne started and we gave her to John Stott after he lost his previous bitch, R.T.Ch. Kadnook Our Happy Miss [Midge].

‘Milly’ is by NTL & GR.Ret.Trl.Ch. Kadnook Pride ov Cork CM [Monty]- Roo’s father, out of Kadnook Believe In Dreams [Tawn].

‘Milly’ had a litter to ‘Scot’ about 5 months ago and John stated to us that the bitch pup we gave him to run on will be better than ‘Milly’ , a big statement when we are talking about a 5 month old pup.

Jill will be in contact with you soon, she has all the details re: collection from dogs etc.

Hey Don,

Rogue is doing well. She's basically caught on to going outside to use the bathroom,
I tried her on the toilet, but she's still a little too little. She's very mischevious, and
energetic, which is a good sign. She also responds to 'come' about 70% of the time,
which is not bad for being here five days.

I'll keep in touch, needn't worry. Thanks again Don, she's absolutely gorgeous!

Retired Whistle "Monty"

Siobhan and I have decided to retire Nat and GR Rt Ch Kadnook Pride ov Cork CM - MONTY (at least from trialling)
It is hard to believe that Monty has been trialling for more than a decade having competed in his first Novice at 9 months with his last trial the 2011 National at eleven years.

By the end of his career Monty had in excess of 350 championship points. He won his first state title just before his 3rd birthday. By the end of his career he had won 10 championships including the 2009 National and had been the runner up in a further 10 championships. Monty is the only dog in Australian retrieving history to have won every state championship as well as the National. However our proudest achievement has been Monty's record in the "National". Monty started 9 Nationals failing to complete the 2003 national in Tassie. However he then successfully completed the next 8 nationals in a row finishing in the top 5 in 7 of those trials.

Hi soundness, drive and willingness to always give his best is a credit to his breeders.
It has been hard explaining to Mont that he is 11 now, that the mind is willing but body not quite so able. We are sure he will enjoy a few more retrieves over the rest of his life while he also enjoys the lifestyle of indoor living and being able to break to shot for that next duck!!!!

Roo was the first dog I imported from Kadnook. Bella and Pat are from her, Dot is from Pat. Rose was the second, Mud, Mutt and Beau are from her, Bee is from Mud. Jill was the last one from there, she and I go to Saskatchewan today for 10 days of waterfowl hunting. Kadnook`s accomplishments, principles and breeding priorities cause me to agree with many others to say, Kadnook is the best breeder of Labrador Retrievers in the world. I am very proud and privileged that Kadnook has trusted me with their life long efforts to preserve and improve our favorite breed.

Hi Don,

I've been busy traveling the Atlantic Provinces. Here's a few pics of my traveling companion. I find the first picture reminds me of an old wise dog that has visited the world and knows a lot. The second picture in front of the sign reminds me of the Travelocity gnome that you see on TV. LOL. Too funny. Ramsye is doing very well. All his puppy teeth have fallen out and he's been very good at only chewing on his toys. It helps that we stay on top of it. I'm still spending time training with him. He retrieves the bumpers with no problem and heals on return. Great to see. still needs work, but very good progress. I've started having difficulties keeping him at heal during walks. He often wants to be ahead and at the end his leach. I correct him with the training collar, but he continuously does this. Any suggestions?

We're off to a family reunion in Rogersville NB this weekend, but we have to find time to go visit you guys with Ramsey.We'll be in touch soon and we will send more pics.

Here are the first few pictures of Noah taken at the Waterfalls in the White mountains State Park in new Hampshire. He had such a lot of fun swimming in the river even though the current was very string due to the falls and ran on the huge boulders like a mountain goat J

I took a few photos of MJ last week and thought I would pass them along to you. She is a good looking dog and smart, we have been working on training but she is excitable and gets distracted easily. I wouldnt mind getting a few tips on teaching her to heel (walk) on her leash, she still pulls alot even with a choke collar.

Hi Don,

The site helped me a lot and I have checked out most of the info you have spent time providing to everyone. I live in Alberta close to Edmonton on a farm and my breed is Havanese. Our first obedience show is on the 6th and 7th of August, I'm taking two, Just got the judging schedule tonight and do I have some early mornings coming up...8:30 in the morning and we are first up with my bitch on Sunday morning. Both titled their CGN first of June and that was wonderful. I'm rather concerned about the long sits and stays with my tiny dogs in a field of possible prey drive dogs. Unlike conformation they don't list the other breeds in the class. Really nervous about my entry with my CH dogs in a Novice class but hopefully it will go well, 40 feet away with unsupervised "other dogs" is scary. Very new territory for us, wish me luck. I firmly believe that conformation winners should be health tested before breeding as you do. I also think that classes like obedience and CGN are good monitors for temperment pre breeding. I have only the two Havs and the male is neutered and they are both young dogs and half siblings. My background is 40 years of showing/breeding/training horses but I'm getting a little too old for that and the dogs are a lot easier on the body after time.

EOLBA show on Saturday

First I must say thanks for all the great pics – its looks beautiful – another place we have to put on our wish list to visit J

The EOLBA show on Saturday was very long and very HOT. Noah won his 16-18 mths class but that was it. Well didn’t’ really expect anything. I heard the sweepstake judges critique which was – Very nice head, good angulation, happy dog and out of coat. Well Noah coat is very fine and when it is humid it seems to stick closer to his skin which makes it look even less thick.

There also was a costume class and we entered Noah as ‘Noah and the Ark’ of course!!! Costume designed and stitched by my sister, Ark made by me J Of course it was the best there and Noah wore it in great style down to the beard and Roman sandals.

We are really looking forward to Frederiction – hopefully its not as hot as it is here.

They have had a burning desire to visit the homeland of their breed. I, and many others, think they are the best breeders and trainers of Labs in the world!

Hi Don,

How are you & your wife? We are doing great. Dawson is amazing! We love him soooo much!! We have been asked on several occasions how we got our dog to be so well behaved. He has an amazing personality, and is very good with all commands. Oh, BTW, I hate to say it ,but he is a much nicer dog than Tanner (the chocolate lab) he he he!

I thought you were full of shit when you told me he was a nicer dog lol! :) But you do know beauty is in the eye of the beholder lol! Seriously, we are so happy we chose one of your dogs, and hopefully will again in the future. I still really want a yellow lab to add to my collection. I just have to do some more begging lol.

We are adopting an adult service dog from one of Ken's patients she is a chocolate lab. Unfortunately, she has neurotic tendencies when she is not working, hopefully Dawson and Tanner will keep her busy.Hopefully things will work out her owner is very sick and will be going into an extensive care home. I have lots of pics of Dawson when he was a baby until present.

Hi Don,

It was good timing for your email, I’ve been thinking about sending you an update on Zeus lately. I’ve attached the link to my photo album on facebook so you can see the year of Zeus growing and changing. He’s a great dog (admittedly very spoiled) and has been a wonderful addition to our family. We have a trainer that comes to the house who has been teaching me how to work with Zeus and train him. He learns very quickly and we’ve been doing well. Eventually I’d like to start him on agility, I think he’d really enjoy it. We had a dog run for him last summer but he has graduated to the invisible fence and does wonderfully with it, he has lots of space to run around in and just be a dog. He’s very happy and affectionate and everyone loves him. The ladies at the groomers have told me that while all labs are beautiful, Zeus is exceptional and we are inclined to agree J. I think he looks like both Storm and Pat, a perfect combination of the two of them; you’ll have to let me know what you think. We’ll try and make a trip over with him on our travels this summer.

Canada Day weekend w/Noah (pics)

Hope you had a nice Canada Day and weekend.

We had a very nice time at our country house. Noah went swimming in the lake which he thoroughly enjoyed even though the water was quite rough yesterday. Only problem is that he seems to prefer to retrieve sticks – or let me say very large branches! I can even throw out more than one and he will keep going back in without any prompting from me, until had has collected all of them. I am trying to use the bumper but he seems to loose interest in it very quickly. I have picked up a softer orange bumper and will try with that this weekend. Noah is obsessed with trees as you can see in the second picture of him trying to drag the dead tree into the lake.

His other favourite pastime is to sit at the top of our hill and view the surroundings (third pic) or stalk his basenji brothers (fourth pic). We have no shows for the next two weekends so he can enjoy being a dog

Just happened to take these pictures yesterday. It was so hot that we put their bed out on the deck and Noah and Pluto promptly sat down on it J I remember the same time last year – Noah could barely scramble up on to the bed and looked so tiny on it J Time has flown by too quick.
